1. What is the difference between garden mix and topsoil?
Garden mix and topsoil serve different jobs. Topsoil is mainly used to fill and level garden beds or replace poor existing soil, while a richer blend like our Premium Organic Garden Mix adds compost, aged manure and mulch to actively feed plants and improve soil structure. If you're planting straight into the ground, garden mix gives your plants a stronger start than plain topsoil alone.
2. How much soil do I need for my garden or lawn?
Measure the length and width of the area in metres and multiply by the depth you want to add, in metres, to get the volume in cubic metres. For example, a 10 square metre garden bed topped up 100mm deep needs 1 cubic metre of soil. Use our online Quantity Estimator or call our Belrose team and we'll help you order the right amount, whether it's a few bags or a bulk cube.
3. What is the best soil for vegetable gardens?
Our Veggie Mix is the best soil for vegetable gardens, a premium blend of garden mix and soil conditioner with added organic matter, giving vegetables the nutrients and drainage they need to thrive. For native gardens, our Standard Garden Mix, with a higher mulch content, is better suited to native plants that prefer leaner, well drained soil.
4. What is underlay soil and do I need it before laying turf?
Underlay soil is a base layer placed before laying new turf to support root establishment and drainage. Our Organic Turf Grow Underlay is a fertilised 50/50 blend of soil, ash and sand for strong root growth, while our budget 80/20 underlay, 80% sand and 20% organic soil, suits most standard lawns. Getting the underlay right makes a big difference to how well new turf takes and stays green.
5. Do you deliver soil across Sydney, and can I order in bulk?
Yes, we deliver soil across the Northern Beaches and North Shore, including Frenchs Forest, Pymble and surrounding suburbs, with options for loose tipped bulk by the tonne or cube, 25kg bags, or large bulka bags delivered by ute, truck or crane truck for tricky access sites. Whether you need a few bags for a garden bed or several cubic metres for a landscaping job, we can size the order and delivery to suit.
6. Can I pick up soil from your yard instead of delivery?
Yes, all our soil products can be collected directly from our Belrose yard at 190 Forest Way, open Monday to Saturday 7am to 5pm and Sunday 8am to 3pm. Yard pickup is popular with landscapers and tradies who want soil the same day alongside turf, mulch, sand or other landscape supplies.
7. How much does soil cost in Sydney?
Soil in Sydney typically costs between $25 and $145 depending on the blend and quantity, with budget 80/20 turf underlay at the lower end and Premium Potting Mix at the top. Garden mix, veggie mix and soil conditioner sit in between. Ace Landscape & Building Supplies delivers soil daily across the Northern Beaches and North Shore, or you can collect from our Belrose yard for the best per-bag or per-cube price.
8. What is the best soil for potted plants?
Our Premium Potting Mix, a blend of Premium Garden Mix and composted pine, is the best choice for pots, planters and raised containers. It stays free draining while holding enough nutrients and moisture for healthy root growth, unlike heavier garden soils which can compact and waterlog in a pot. Ask our team if you're mixing pots for natives versus flowering or edible plants, as the right blend can differ.
